Camera phones

Today, not only everyone in your household has a mobile phone but they expect to get the same picture quality than the one obtained with an Autofocus Digital Still camera. How often have you missed that very important moment due to time delay associated with your mobile phone, either equipped with a traditional mechanical actuator, or simply because your battery has drawn out further to the few pictures taken previously ?

In 2009 more than a billion phones, notebook computers and other consumer electronics devices shipped worldwide, were equipped with camera modules. By 2012, analysts predict camera module shipments to exceed 2 billion units. If you only consider cellular phones, about 1.5 billion units will be shipped with a main camera.

Since image quality has become a major requirement in the race to higher resolutions, with the emergence of 3,  5- to 8 and even 12-megapixel camera modules, the need to auto focus is essential. This is particularly relevant in popular video recording applications, where a dynamic environment (i.e. moving camera and moving subject) requires a camera to continuously and accurately refocus in a timely manner.

Traditional mechanical autofocus systems (Voice Coil Motors or VCM) fail to address the stringent cost requirements of camera modules manufacturers and robustness.

poLight TLens is the smallest autofocus actuator that can be easily integrated in all existing small factor camera modules without degrading the original image quality.
